If you are new in this world of building gaming computers by parts you will soon realize that it’s not an easy task. This post is specially written to help those who are willing to learn the core concepts of computer hardware but don’t know where to start. Let’s get started!
Are You Feeling Lost?
There are hundreds of motherboards models to choose from with different chipsets and sockets, a wide variety of GPUs and CPUs, DDR3/DDR4 RAM with different frequencies, cases sizes, SSD vs HDD… then your brain suffers a short circuit and you end up with a good-for-nothing laptop under your arm before you even realize it.
I know that story, a friend of a friend did it once… and then he asked himself: what do I need to learn to know how to choose the right parts to build my own desktop gaming computer? So he asked Google and after traversing almost all the available forums, blogs, news, videos (…) he could find around and a couple of months weeks later he was feeling pretty much ready to choose the parts for his very first custom computer.
This blog has been built upon the frustration I felt during that process… I mean, my friend’s friend. But I’m not here just to tell you “buy this CPU, buy that GPU”. What I really aim for is that you can understand the reason behind that selection, how the different parts are related to each other to build a flawless computer.

How To Become A PC Builder Ninja
Step 1. Learn Hardware Basics
The first step is understanding what parts are needed to build a computer, how they work and how they interact with the other components. Otherwise, you won’t be able to optimize the performance, optimize the budget and avoid one of the most common mistakes: bottlenecks.
Lucky for you, this blog has all you need to get started right away. In the top website menu, you can see that there is a menu item called “Hardware and Peripherals”. Every guide that I’ve written has to main blocks. The first block is always a “How To Choose…” piece of content where you can learn all you need about that specific component. The second block is a buying guide where I add/update/remove the best models organized by price or feature.
As a personal recommendation, I would start reading the CPU and Motherboard guides. This will help you to understand what chipset do you need based on the CPU or vice versa. Then you should read the PSU guide, as people usually don’t care about this part when it’s actually one of the most important pieces of the build. Do not make the mistake of buying a cheap power supply. After that, you can read the remaining guides in any order until you piece together all the information.
You can find all the hardware guides clicking on the “Hardware & Peripherals” menu or on the following link:
There are also a few more in-depth hardware related guides available:
- Learn How To Decide Between SDDs And HDDs
- All You Need To Know About The New Nvidia’s Pascal Architecture
(Optional) Peripheral Guides
Peripherals are also important but not strictly necessary to build a computer, that’s why this sub-section is marked as optional. Even though, I strongly recommend you to also read the following guides. You will learn the different types of mechanics keyboards mechanisms, or how to choose a mouse depending on the games you usually play.
Step 2. Building Your First Gaming Computer
Now that you know the importance of every part involved in any computer build, you can see whether a bunch of pieces makes up a balanced, well-designed build or not. Do you want to test out your new knowledge? Read the following post where I discuss the differences between buying a Pre-built computer and building your own by parts. Come back to this guide when you are finished to continue with the last steps.
Save Money Building Your Own Gaming Computer Instead Of Buying It Pre Built
After reading the previous post you will probably realize that pre-builts are a complete waste of money, almost a scam, we could say. I can’t stand the idea of giving away my hard earned money just like that. There are people that just don’t care about that. But I do. With the same amount of money you would spend in a pre-built, you could build yourself a lot better computer. Don’t settle for a result that you can easily improve!
Let’s continue. Now that you know what NOT to do, it’s time to learn how to properly design a computer build:

And finally, once you get the parts, you need to actually set it up and put all the parts together:

In case you don’t want to spend your time designing a build from scratch you can start off with one of my builds and modify it at your will. There are unlimited options to customize the builds. It all depends on your needs, your budget and tastes. And, of course, if you need my help you can send me an email or leave a comment below. I will add here just two examples to avoid overcharging this post with too much information.
The first build I want to show you is the most popular one among the entire website: the $500 console killer gaming computer. This build has been designed to fit a tight budget (which is the most common scenario) while providing an awesome gaming experience. This little beast can run all current games at 1080p with High to Ultra quality settings. If you want to know the details about this build, what makes it so special and powerful, go and read carefully the following post:

The second example is a build from the “Build By Game” category, where you can find computer builds designed to specifically fulfill some game requirements. These builds try to answer a question that I’ve asked myself a ton of times: “What CPU or GPU do I need to play ‘x’ game?”. Do not hesitate to contact me if you want me to design a custom build for a particular game or with any other requirements.

I know this is a LOT of information to read and grasp but take your time. You will get it just as I did. And I know that it can be difficult sometimes. If you ever feel lost or stuck leave me a message and I will try to do my best to help you out and also you will help me to improve this post and the whole website. It’s a win-win situation 🙂
