In this post, I’m going to show you how to build the most powerful yet budget optimized gaming computer using a GTX 1080 Ti 11GB as the central component, THE only and mighty true 4K graphics card.

Unlike the Budget Builds, this one is not limited by a budget, therefore there is only one simple constraint: choosing the best components to get the most out of the GTX 1080 Ti, which means avoiding bottlenecks and getting the most optimized final price.

Finally, 4K Gaming At 60 FPS

The GTX 1080 Ti, released in March 2017, is the first graphics card capable of running 4K games at stable 50-60 FPS on its own, without recurring to a multiple-GPU configuration (SLI, CrossFire).

The Nvidia’s flagship mounts the GP104 chipset, featuring 3584 CUDA cores, 88 ROPs and 224 TMUs. It has a compute power of 11.3 TFLOPS (remember that this value cannot be directly compared with AMD graphic cards as AMD’s architecture has a higher compute performance but it’s not expressed into a real advantage over Nvidia when tested on video games), with a 484 GB/s of total memory bandwidth.

As you can see in the table below, the Ti version improves the plain GTX 1080 performance around 40%… a huge beast indeed. As for the price, it also keeps the 1.4 ratio if we compare the average GPUs prices: $550 for the GTX 1080 and $780 for the 1080 Ti.

The GTX 1080 Ti Founders Edition has a Base clock of 1480 MHz and a Boost clock 1582 MHz, but depending on the manufacturer these values could vary a little. The power consumption is (TDP) of 250W, just as the Titan X.

Compared to the previous Nvidia generation, the GTX 1080 Ti ($770) is as powerful as the latest GTX Titan X ($1200). Check the following video to see this graphics card in action in several games:

Unleashing The Beast’s Power

It’s easy to say that the GTX 1080 Ti is the best GPU in the market for playing all current games at 4K at 60+ FPS. But the graphics card won’t be able to output all its power if it’s not paired with the appropriate processor, and this single decision can make a BIG difference.

Depending on the CPU, the total FPS could range from 6 to 40 units, so it is critical to choose a model that won’t bottleneck the GPU.

For a top-tier GPU like the 1080 Ti, we need a poweful processor to future proof the whole build and squeeze every FPS out of it.

Assuming that, if you are willing to pay for a 4K-ready desktop computer, you have a substantial budget, my recommendation is to build a computer that would be easy to expand with an additional GTX 1080 Ti.

And of course, without having to replace the CPU or motherboard.

Following this approach, the best CPU I can think of is one of the latest Intel Coffee Lake’s: the i5-8600K.

And why the i5 and not any of the i7’s? You won’t note any difference in games. The i5-8600K has 6 cores + 6 threads at 3.6 GHz and it can easily overclock to 4.0 GHz. Going for the i7 doesn’t worth the money in my opinion.

The Best GTX 1080 Ti Gaming Build

Now that we have settled the CPU and GPU we want to use, we can think about the remaining parts.

We will add a Coffee Lake compatible motherboard so we can mount the i5-8600K. We will also add 16GB of DDR4 RAM, a premium PSU and one of the coolest liquid sytems to let the GTX 1080 Ti working at its best.

Case – Corsair Graphite 780T

Like with all Corsair cases, one of the most remarkable features of the Graphite 780T is its awesome cooling system, so you’re covered if want to overclock your CPU, run multiple GPUs, or if you just want a better airflow.

There are mounting points for up to five fans, including dual front 200mm or 120mm fans, dual 120mm fans on top and a rear 120mm fan.

The Graphite Series 780T is a full-tower so you can easily accommodate even the longest graphics cards in the industry thanks to the reconfigurable hard drive bays.

Processor – Intel Core i5-8600K

The Intel Core i5-8600K is a Coffe Lake processor (Intel’s 8th Generation, socket 1551) and probably the best gaming CPU of the current generation.

This CPU is powerful enough to run all your games at stable 60 FPS 4K resolutions as long as it’s paired with a powerful GPU, like the Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti 11GB.

Of course, this little beast can handle a multi-GPU configuration. Imagine what you could do with a couple of 1080 Ti’s…

  • 6 cores (6 threads) at 3.6 GHz (base) and 4.3 GHz (boost)
  • Stable overclocking at +4.2 GHz!

I’d recommend this model over any of the superior Coffe Lakes i7’s for several reasons:

  • For gaming, they all have similar performance levels
  • The extra 6 threads of the i7 models will rarely be used when gaming
  • The i5 is substantially cheaper

Graphics Card – ASUS GTX 1080 Ti ROG

Nvidia has done a big step forward with the new Pascal architecture. And if we look the models available out there from Nvidia and AMD, we can easily conclude that Nvidia owns the high-end graphics card’s market.

The model I’ve chosen for this build is the Asus GTX 1080 Ti ROG STRIX OC 11GB, featuring 11GB GDDR5x of VRAM. As for the output connectors, there are three DisplayPort 1.4 outputs, one single HDMI 2.0b and one Dual-link DVI-D connector.

This board comes with a custom software from Asus (Aura Sync) that allows users to change the RGB LEDs colors, as well as the working frequencies, that can be switched between two modes:

  • OC mode: 1594 MHz / 1708 MHz
  • Gaming mode (default): 1569 MHz / 1683 MHz

RAM – Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB

The Corsair Vengeance LPX memory is designed for high-performance overclocking.

The heat spreader is made of pure aluminum for faster heat dissipation, and the performance PCB helps manage heat and provides superior overclocking headroom.

Vengeance LPX DDR4 modules are compatibility-tested across 100 Series motherboards for reliably fast performance.

Also, they support XMP 2.0 for automatic overclocking, so you will be able to exploit its full potential, as long as you have a compatible motherboard (an Intel Z370 or any AM4 model).

Storage Unit – Samsung 860 PRO 256GB

In order to enjoy lighting fast loading times in your games, you will definitely need an SSD.

Released in January 2018, the Samsung 860 PRO is the last revision of the most reliable M.2 solid state disk you can find in the market.

Samsung ships the 860 series with a new MJX controller that supports low-power DDR4 memory, enabling lower power consumption, cooler temperatures and reduced manufacturing costs, all thanks to its smaller footprint.

With a brute capacity of 256 GB, this storage unit has a read speed of 560 MB/s and a write speed of 530 MB/s. Nothing special here. Where this SSD stands out is in its ultra-high durability of 150 TB.

Power Supply – Corsair RM1000x

What can I say about PSU’s? A cheap / bad-quality power supply could put in serious danger the whole system.

Believe me when I tell you that this part is the most important one if you want to future proof your computer and keep it working at full potential as long as possible without degrading the CPU and GPU.

For a high-end build (overclockable CPU + GTX 1080), we will need a good quality 1000 W power supply, and the best option I can think of is the Corsair HX1000i

This beautiful fully modular 1000 watts PSU with 80+ Platinum certified will keep your computer safe from over-voltage and over-current peaks. It also includes protection against over-power and over-temperature.

It also has a “ZeroRPM” mode for fanless operation at low loads to dramatically reduce produced noise.

4K Gaming Peripherals And Extras

In case you are building your first gaming computer or upgrading your current rig from a 1080p or 1440p computer, you should also need to upgrade your monitor.

My recommendation here is the Acer XB280HK BPRZ, a 28-inch 4K TN monitor, with a 1ms time response and a refresh rate of 60Hz.

Although this is a 4K monitor, it doesn’t mean that it must be necessarily more expensive than all 1440p models. You can find several 1440p 144Hz monitors at the same price (around the $520).

As for the keyboard, I included a compact mechanical keyboard, with Cherry MX Brown switches, RGB LED lighting with per key customization, programmable keys, double injection keycaps and 6 key rollover (to avoid hosting). Say hello to the Excalibur Spectrum G7SFL keyboard, from Tesoro.

And last but not least important, the mouse. The Razer Abyssus V2 is a versatile gaming model designed to comfortably play all game genre styles. The V2 comes with an all-new 5.000 DPI optical sensor with improved sensitivity and responsiveness compared to the previous version.

  1. I want to start uploading 4k video game content to Youtube from PC and the Xbox One X, what PC do I need for this? Would said PC be compatible with the CE511-HN – 4K HDMI 2.0 PCIe Frame Grabber? My budget can go to $3,500 if need be. Thanks so much for the help.

    1. This build is all you need to play games at 4k and 60 FPS. I’ve made some tweaks today to the CPU and motherboard to make it even better and the total price is around $2400.

      Recording 4k video is very CPU intensive, although the build’s CPU is much more powerful than what is generally recommended for 4K gaming (i7-7700k).

      As far as I know, some people have successfully recorded 4k gaming with a gtx 980 Ti, and as you know, the gtx 1080 Ti is much more powerful, so you won’t have any problem with this build.

      Summarizing: I’d try recording 4k gaming with the build as it is, out of the box, with the Nvidia’s ShadowPlay software. If it’s not enough you can always add another GTX 1080 Ti in an SLI configuration (this build can handle up to 3 GPUs) and you would even keep it under your budget (around $3200).

    1. Man… relax.

      First off, I recommend the 6850k so you can add another GTX 1080 Ti in the future. You can’t do that with the 7700k. Also, I will update the CPU with the new i7-7800x this month, which is the logical successor of the current 6850k.

      Why would you build a 4K computer to use a 1440p monitor? You are wasting almost 1000 dollars…
